Politeness Is The Antidote To Dangerous Driving

By Mikhail Alexandrov

In order to be courteous to a fellow driver, one first has to be mindful of them… to admit the presence of them… isn’t that right? The dictionary uses the expression “consideration toward others” to depict politeness.

Let’s ponder this for a mo, shall we? The more you go on towards being a pro driver, the easier it is to find that the common attribute of defensive driving is your knowing of what’s occurring beyond your vehicle body bounds.

Most all the issues, less one, that can make one into a negligent driver revolve around events inside the passenger compartment. Cell phone calls, passengers, email, music… all this stuff is what distracts you from paying attention.

Another factor is your mind-set. Mull over it, if you are irritated with something, a driver's seat is not the best place to be and you should be self-conscious enough to conform your driving style until you calm down, or not drive at all. Your touchstone should always be politeness.

If you are courteous then a bunch of good things are occurring in that CPU in your cranium. When you are courteous, you are paying attention to what’s developing outside. You are also paying attention to fellow drivers' demands, which is as decent as it gets. There are piles of opportunities on the average drive around town to be respectful to others. They may not each time pay attention to your courtesy, but they usually do. In my long experience those limited kindnesses you distribute to complete strangers usually get returned back to you by other complete strangers as if by magic… kind of cool really. You all of a sudden observe other drivers allowing you into tight spaces when before they behaved like jerks… magic I say to you.

If you will only risk to be as polite as possible to fellow drivers for one week, I foretell you will be astounded. It really modifies your whole view on driving while at the same time distinctly setting you as a real jimhickey. Who amongst us doesn’t desire to be a jimhickey?

What ends up occurring, is that you soon find yourself seeking occasions to cut the fellow driver some slack, which leaves you feeling great about yourself. It also focuses you… pay attention here… focuses you beyond the bubble in your car. You are focusing on what’s occurring out there much more, when you risk to be courteous to fellow drivers.

This limited exercise in human relations 101 can convert you from a mediocre driver to a pro in no time. So… you if you desire to be an expert driver, it’s that easy… just cut the fellow driver some slack. Even if they don’t recognize it, you will be a best human being and a better driver for doing it.
